“To deny people their human rights is to challenge their very humanity” – Nelson Mandela
In South Africa, Human Rights Day is celebrated on 21 March, in remembrance of the Sharpeville massacre which took place on 21 March 1960. Parliament’s role on this day is to empower the people so that the democratic processes become known to all South Africans.
It also serves to raise awareness of the importance of human rights and the protection thereof. This year, let 21 March not only is the day we commemorate a tragedy, but also a day we celebrate our humanity. Let us focus on compassion, respect, love, dignity and equality.
“Peace can only last where human rights are respected, where the people are fed, and where individuals and nations are free” – Dalai Lama
