Merry Christmas to all

“Christmas is a time for family, food and fellowship. Wishing you nothing but the best that the season has to offer.”

Adoration of the Shepherds by the Dutch painter Gerard van Honthorst, 1622

It’s that time of year. December has arrived, bringing with it all the happiness of Christmas. But what exactly is the true meaning of Christmas?

Is it the presents under the tree, the lights in the windows, The big Christmas meal with family and friends, stockings hung in the lounge, and shouts of “Merry Christmas” to those who pass us on the street? Is this the real Christmas?

We think that’s just a part of it, but found an excellent definition of the “the true meaning of Christmas,” in an American magazine, from 1889:

“To give up one’s very self — to think only of others — how to bring the greatest happiness to others — that is the true meaning of Christmas.”

John 3:16-17 says, “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.” The true meaning of Christmas is the celebration of this incredible act of love.
